Pete Wilton – Lost Souls

This ebook presents a variety of card tricks centered around the ‘Impossible Location’ concept. The core effect involves a spectator freely selecting a card, which is then lost in the deck under seemingly impossible circumstances, yet you are able to reveal it.
Lost Souls is a compilation of straightforward techniques designed to help you locate a spectator’s chosen card, regardless of how it is lost in the deck. Various methods are included, catering to different preferences for setup, all employing clever strategies to achieve the desired outcome.
From the Introduction:
Years ago, I became intrigued by the idea of discovering a chosen card that a spectator had placed back into the deck without any assistance from me. My ideal conditions for this effect were:
- An ordinary deck of 52 unique cards;
- The spectator shuffles the deck;
- The spectator selects a card independently;
- The card is returned to the deck by the spectator, who can place it anywhere;
- After the card is returned, the spectator shuffles the deck again without my involvement;
- I only touch the cards after they have been shuffled and returned to me.
Essentially, I wanted a scenario where the spectator shuffles the deck, removes a card, places it back, and shuffles again before handing it back to me.
After experimenting with various concepts, I developed a method that closely aligned with my criteria. This effect, named ‘Lost,’ proved to be highly deceptive. However, there were aspects of ‘Lost’ that I felt could be improved, prompting me to continue my search. My fascination with these types of effects drove me to explore additional methods, which ultimately led to the creation of the techniques found in this book.
I hope you find the material within useful for crafting your own impossible location effects. Each technique employs different methods and conditions. While not all fulfill my original criteria, most come quite close.
Additionally, I’ve included some of my favorite effects that can be performed with a borrowed deck, which you do not touch until it is time to find the selected card. These are featured in the impromptu section and can all be executed with a shuffled deck. Enjoy exploring these techniques and discovering your own favorite impossible location effect!
