Peter Duffie – Method In Effect
CONTENTS & EFFECTS
TWO’S COMPANY: You start by removing the four Kings from the deck. Two spectators each select a card, which are then lost in the deck. You present the audience with a choice of Kings, either the red or black ones. If they choose the red Kings, you reveal the first spectator’s selection reversed between them. After placing this sandwich on the table, you take the two black Kings, lay them face up on top of the deck, and perform a complete cut. The first selection disappears from the red Kings, only to reappear between the two black Kings in the center of the deck.
DIPLOID: Two previously chosen cards are revealed using two random locator cards. A stunning effect!
COLD FUSION: You set aside the two black Jacks for a scientific experiment. Two cards are selected and signed by spectators, then inserted face up into the deck. You place the black Jacks face to face, causing them to fuse together. You show the fused card for inspection. When you spread the deck, only one signed card is face up. This card is revealed to have fused to the back of the other signed card, which is also shown to the audience.
AMALGA – MATE: A card is removed from the deck and placed unseen into your pocket as a prediction. Two cards are freely selected, and their values and suits combine to create a new card, such as the Nine of Hearts. You then reveal that your prediction card is indeed the Nine of Hearts.
JAGGED EDGE: A signed selection is discovered in an unusual way, with half of a locator card vanishing and appearing stapled to its back!
THE 25% SOLUTION: Another bizarre revelation of a chosen signed card, where the corner of a different selected card vanishes, only to be found stapled to the back of the signed selection!
PROCURING THE ACES: A spectator cuts the deck into four piles and hands you the top card from each pile in any order. You perform a simple elimination, placing the remaining card face down on the table. Repeating this process, the final four cards are revealed to be the four Aces.
METATHESIS: One spectator thinks of a card from a packet of red cards, while another thinks of a card from a packet of black cards. The two selections then transpose.
GALA SHOW: Two spectators successfully match the four Kings to their respective Queens in a blind test. Pure bliss!
FORCED ENTRY: A quick and puzzling effect using a deck set in a 13/14 Force stack (discard two Kings).
IMOGENETIC: Inspired by Alan Francis’ “Genimo” and Stephen Tucker’s “Imogination,” this effect presents a solution to an intriguing problem posed in the original articles.
SIMPLACES: A straightforward production of the four Aces, where the spectator appears to have control over the outcome.
SUCCUBI: You present a mixed deck of ESP cards and invite a spectator to reverse one card, which remains in its position. The spectator then spells “OUT OF ORDER,” cuts the deck, and deals five hands of five cards. Each hand contains mixed symbols, except for the one with the reversed card, which contains all five of the same symbol. The reversed card protects its hand while the others are thrown OUT OF ORDER!
CHAMBRE ARDENTE: Using a standard ESP deck, you guide the audience through an occult journey, culminating in a spectator finding all five cards of one symbol.
ARADIA: A spectator removes a card from an ESP deck and hides it in their pocket. Another spectator selects five cards at random, mixes them, and you intuitively reveal the symbol they are thinking of, correctly identifying the card in the spectator’s pocket.
MEDVEGIA: A captivating matching of ESP cards that effectively showcases the influence of money.
THE SUPERNAL DATEBOOK: A diary prediction with an unexpected and humorous twist at the conclusion.
THE SECOND HAND GAMBLER: You illustrate how easy it is for a card cheat to deal a Royal Flush in Spades. After shuffling and cutting the deck, you deal two hands, revealing a Royal Flush. You then challenge the spectator to name any Poker hand, demonstrating your skill by revealing a Full House using only the cards dealt.
BLAKJAK: After a spectator shuffles and cuts the deck, you exchange top and bottom cards. When revealed, both top cards are a King and an Ace – Blackjack! Flipping the face cards shows they are also a King and an Ace – another Blackjack!
BLADE RUNNER: A selected card is lost in the deck, and you thrust a pen-knife into the outer end. When you pull it out, a card is seen impaled on the blade, but it’s the wrong card! However, when the spectator removes it, they discover it has transformed into their selected card. This effect can be performed with any deck at any time.
THE 5 POINT 5 TRICK: A classic gag, “The 31/2 of Clubs,” is presented in a methodically sound version that retains the punch of the original while being accessible to laypeople.
DRAW POKER: This trick emerged from a conversation with Roy Walton, who resolved a card problem that was later published in OPUS.
