On April 19, 1692, one woman was tried for witchcraft, forever known as… The Given.

During the infamous Salem Witch Trials, Bridget Bishop faced accusations of bewitching five young women. She was the most accused individual. Meanwhile, a secret society called the Movement of the Occult (MOTO) believed Bridget was ‘given’ to them by Satan, destined to end the persecution of witches by the Church. Thus, she became known as ‘The Given.’

In this effect, a painting of Bridget is displayed alongside a set of cards, each bearing a different name of those tried. Spectators are invited to participate by sorting the cards into ‘Angel’ or ‘Devil’ piles, with any rejected cards placed next to Bridget’s image. Every choice is made freely by the spectator.

Despite the randomness of their selections, when the ‘Angel’ pile is revealed, each card displays a letter that spells ‘A-N-G-E-L.’ The ‘Devil’ cards, when turned over, spell ‘D-E-V-I-L.’ This raises the question: how did the spectator achieve this without knowing the letters were there? Was it mere chance, or has ‘The Given’ influenced their decisions? The rejected pile ultimately spells ‘G-I-V-E-N.’
