Effect: The performer reveals that certain card players possess an uncanny ability to sense their opponents’ hands. To test this theory, the performer invites a participant to engage in an intriguing experiment. Four opaque envelopes are presented, each containing one of the four aces from a deck, shuffled to conceal their identities. The envelopes are arranged in front of the participant, who is tasked with guessing which ace is hidden in each envelope.

The participant selects an envelope and predicts which ace it holds. The performer notes the suit on the envelope’s exterior. This process continues until all envelopes are marked. After displaying the suits, the performer explains that only three envelopes are necessary for the initial phase. The participant is instructed to set one envelope aside as their “lucky card,” hypothetically choosing the one marked with Hearts.

Upon revealing the three remaining envelopes, the performer demonstrates that the participant has accurately identified the aces within. The true astonishment unfolds when the participant opens the set-aside envelope, revealing not only the correct ace but also a handwritten note stating, “This card was placed aside as your lucky card. It is the Ace of Hearts.” The participant can then inspect the envelopes and the aces, confirming the absence of any predictions.
