Channel 4 is set to launch 3D programming soon, aiming to transform the future of television viewing. This innovative approach will include a variety of shows, such as a spectacular magic performance by Derren Brown and footage from the Queen’s Coronation. Following previous unsuccessful attempts at 3D TV, there is renewed optimism that this initiative could redefine British television.

Sky has announced plans for Europe’s first dedicated 3D TV channel next year, which will require specialized equipment. In contrast, Channel 4 is utilizing technology that allows viewers to enjoy immersive content on standard televisions. To promote this venture, Channel 4 will distribute special amber and blue lens glasses at supermarkets prior to the airing of their 3D shows. This autumn, the channel will present a week of prime-time 3D content, and if successful, it may become a regular offering.

Channel 4 has partnered with Sainsbury’s to provide these glasses for free in most major stores during the week leading up to the broadcasts. Online shoppers will also receive a complimentary pair with their deliveries.

The highlight of Channel 4’s 3D programming will be two hour-long documentaries featuring the Queen. One will showcase 3D color newsreel footage of her 1953 Coronation, while the other will cover a recent Garter Ceremony at Windsor Castle. Derren Brown’s 3D Magic Spectacular will present specially filmed tricks from various magicians, along with archival 3D footage.
