Derren Brown’s Trick or Treat (2007-2008)
Trick or Treat is a captivating British television series hosted by Derren Brown, which aired on Channel 4 starting April 13, 2007. The show revolves around a single volunteer chosen from a pool of participants who responded to national advertisements. Their experience hinges on the card they select: a ‘Trick’ leads to a challenging situation, while a ‘Treat’ offers a rewarding experience. However, the outcomes can be surprising; for instance, in Series 2, a participant faced a distressing scenario involving a kitten, deemed a ‘treat’ due to the positive growth Derren anticipated for her. Conversely, a volunteer who drew a ‘trick’ was kidnapped but had learned escapology, allowing her to escape effortlessly.
Notably, episodes of Trick or Treat do not include Derren’s typical disclaimer about the absence of actors or stooges, as some participants, like the ambulance crew in the final episode of Series 1, are acknowledged as actors.
2007–2008 Highlights
Derren showcases his most mischievous side, enticing members of the public into a Faustian pact as they engage in the eerie game of Trick or Treat.
The series received a nomination for Best Entertainment at the Broadcast Awards in 2008.
