Magic Magazine: A Legacy of Illusion
Magic was a pioneering monthly publication edited by Ellis Stanyon, debuting in October 1900 and spanning 177 issues until its final release in June 1920, with a hiatus during World War I.
Stanyon, a prominent magic dealer and author, aimed to ‘popularize the Art of Sleight of Hand’ in the inaugural issue. His lessons on magic, featured in every edition, provided a comprehensive course for aspiring magicians. The magazine showcased a variety of magical performances, including close-up effects, stage acts, and classic routines, captivating magic enthusiasts with its rich content.
Stanyon also reviewed fellow performers’ acts, offering insights into the techniques behind the tricks, which sparked controversy among some professionals but thrilled his audience. A yearly subscription to Magic was priced at just 5/6d, approximately 25 pence or 37 cents—a remarkable deal now available in digital format.
