Picture this: you’re at a cozy coffee shop, a warm drink in hand, when you strike up a conversation with a friendly stranger.
“What are you working on?” she asks.
“Just jotting down some poetry in my journal,” you reply.
“Are you a poet?” she inquires.
“It’s just a hobby. Would you like to hear some?”
“Absolutely!” she responds enthusiastically.
After sharing a few poems, you ask, “Would you like me to write one just for you?”
“Sure!” she replies.
As you write, you glance up occasionally but ask no questions. “While I write, I made some guesses about your preferences. What’s your favorite color?”
“Green,” she answers.
“And your favorite flower?”
“Lilies,” she says.
“Oh, I think you’ll love this poem…”
You reveal the poem you crafted, which turns out to be deeply personal and tailored just for her! No secret writing here; the details are artfully embedded in a rhyming verse!

Introduction
Poetry, an art form that has thrived for millennia, has roots tracing back over 3,000 years to works like Gilgamesh, and has evolved through the ages with figures like Homer, Virgil, Shakespeare, and Dylan. Its ability to move and resonate with audiences makes it a timeless mode of expression.
The emotional weight of poetry captivates us, perhaps due to our innate connection to music and storytelling. When performances are particularly striking, they are often described as “poetic.” This term applies not only to poets but also to dancers, actors, and painters who reach the pinnacle of their craft.
Magic, too, is an art form that evokes amazement, emotion, and sometimes beauty. However, it transcends mere tools or props; it’s an experience that thrives in the mind. To truly appreciate magic, it must be woven into the fabric of our lives. While performances are limited in time, the essence of magic can be shared in everyday moments. To cultivate a persona of someone with extraordinary abilities requires authenticity both on and off stage. The true “magic” lies in sharing beauty with your audience, transforming the world into your stage and every moment into a performance.
Returning to poetry, we have a unique opportunity. Writing a beautiful poem and gifting it to someone is a time-honored tradition that has endured long before the first magic trick was recorded. Ancient epic poems carved in stone captivated early audiences with wonder and mystery, much like magic aims to do today.
Magic is not isolated; it is intertwined with life. To resonate, it must incorporate relatable elements. Just as motion is relative, so too is magic. The further removed from reality the plots and props become, the harder it is for audiences to connect.
Moreover, magic must tell a story to hold significance. In modern marketing, narratives are employed to evoke emotional investment in products, a strategy also utilized by politicians during campaigns.
Enhancing your magic by integrating it with meaningful themes can amplify its impact.
Consider the value placed on the earliest human figures, painstakingly chiseled into stone. Their simplicity, combined with stories of fundamental human emotions, allows us to appreciate them even millennia later. Can the same be said for magic?
Indeed, it can! Historically, shamans and religious figures wielded magic to transform societies. Labeling their acts as “tricks” could have dire consequences, yet their methods share similarities with contemporary entertainers. The most impactful magicians have always blended their magical talents with themes that resonate with people, presenting their abilities just beyond the realm of belief. This balance of believability has evolved, but the core principle remains unchanged. Today, Derren Brown exemplifies this blend, merging psychological insights with a touch of conjuring and showmanship.
With Poetry Reading, my aim was to create a magical experience in a relaxed setting, harnessing the profound power of poetry and intertwining it with personal stories that inspire and motivate while leaving audiences in awe.
