Theory11 – Chris Severson – The Contrariwise Shift
Contrariwise: To move in the opposite direction or order.
The Contrariwise Shift is a powerful technique that allows you to effortlessly move a chosen card to the top of the deck, regardless of its initial position. This versatile shift can also relocate multiple cards from various depths to the top simultaneously, all without breaks, passes, or altering the deck’s order. It’s executed quickly and silently, and the best part? You can do it with just one hand!
In this tutorial, you’ll master the basic shift along with four additional handlings, including:
- Multiple Shift: Four selected cards are placed in different sections of the deck and, when squared, they magically rise to the top!
- Cover Shift: A chosen card is inserted into the middle of the deck, only to reappear beneath the top card instantly.
- Rising Card: A selection is placed face up in the lower part of the deck and, as if by magic, it rises to the top.
- One Handed: A card is inserted into the deck and, with a blink, it appears on top—all done one-handed and without any cover.
You’ll also find valuable “Pro Tips” sprinkled throughout to help you refine The Contrariwise Shift and explore various creative applications. Additionally, I’ll share a brief history of how I developed this move.
WARNING: This move is not something you can master in five minutes. It requires time and practice to perform smoothly and to fully grasp its potential. While the mechanics are straightforward, executing it flawlessly can be challenging. Once you do, the applications are endless, and the possibilities are limitless!
Now, let’s get started! It’s time to learn this exciting new move.
