Begin by sharing your appreciation for the thrill of a well-executed surprise in a captivating movie or book. These moments, where the unexpected occurs, create an exhilarating experience you wish to share with your participant as part of your narrative.
For instance, if you’re performing for someone named John, have them roll an imaginary die and announce the number it lands on (no forcing involved). Let’s say they land on three.
Next, you enrich the story by having them search for a topic of interest on Wikipedia. They can choose anything they like. For this example, let’s say they select “Football.”
Once they access their chosen page, point out the various links that connect to other pages. Similar to the classic game of Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, it’s intriguing to click through these links and explore where they lead.
Invite them to craft a new narrative by clicking any link they desire. The word they select is noted down on paper (or in a notes app on a phone if necessary). They continue clicking links on subsequent pages, and you write down each chosen word.
Ultimately, you’ll have a collection of seemingly random words that appear to lack a cohesive story…until you unveil the twist. Remind them of the number they freely selected earlier, three. You’ll circle the third letter of each chosen word, leading to a jaw-dropping revelation: “John.”
