A magician presents a standard deck of cards, allowing the spectator to inspect it thoroughly. The spectator can shuffle the deck freely for as long as they desire. Once satisfied, they are invited to choose any two cards from the deck, placing them face down on the table. The magician instructs them to reveal one card, let’s say the Jack of Spades (JS), while the other card remains a mystery until the end.

The spectator places the unknown card face down on top of the JS, and then buries the pair anywhere in the deck, with the magician looking away. They are encouraged to cut the deck multiple times, ensuring that even they are unaware of the cards’ positions.

After this, the magician turns back, takes the deck, and discreetly holds it behind his back. He explains his unique talent for locating face-up cards without seeing them. He claims he will identify the unknown card solely by sensing the position of the face-up card. Additionally, he asserts that he can reveal the identity of a card just by touching it.

As he concentrates, the magician confidently states he has located the unknown card, gradually disclosing its color, suit, and value—let’s say it’s the Six of Hearts (6H).

Finally, he hands the deck back to the spectator, who spreads the cards to find the face-up JS and then reveals the card above it, confirming it is indeed the 6H.

Key features to note:

  • The deck is completely examinable by the spectator at the start and remains unaltered throughout the performance. It is an ordinary deck, and they can inspect it again at the end if they wish.

  • From the moment the spectator shuffles the deck until they conceal the pair, the magician does not touch the cards, especially the selected ones.

  • This technique is effective even if all the cards are perfectly straight, eliminating any assumptions about potential methods.
