A RARE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN FROM A TRUE MENTALIST!

Manufacturer Says

A Review by David Acer

“I can predict the future, read minds, cause the tornado… I can do it all!” — Boris Pocus

Part used-car salesman, part Eastern European mentalist, Boris Pocus is, to my knowledge, the first fictional character to release a lecture DVD. Channeled by Jay Sankey, Boris teaches 16 mental effects, all delivered in an accent that humorously hints at various countries.

Is it entertaining? Absolutely! I found myself laughing from the opening credits. However, what stands out about this collection is that the tricks are not mere parodies; they are genuine feats of mental magic, many requiring little to no sleight of hand.

Highlights include “Perfect Time,” a self-working effect where a spectator’s randomly chosen time is accurately predicted by the magician (as Boris puts it, “This one is like acid down their pants!”); “Lottery,” a mind-bending effect where the magician predicts five cards chosen by five spectators, including their order after shuffling; “Distant Relations,” a clever billet-switch routine where the magician divines a significant name for a spectator; “Speechless,” an inventive effect where the magician foretells any object mentally selected by a spectator; and “True Believer,” potentially the standout trick on the DVD, where a freely chosen key from a bag is the only one that opens the lock.

Throughout these effects, various techniques are taught, including Vernon’s Strip-Out Substitution, the classic Deal-Or-Switch, Jay’s Paper-Clipped switch, the Dry Marker Principle, a Half Pass, and the Tenkai/Goshman Pinch.

It’s worth noting that many (especially mentalists) differentiate between “mental magic” (like the tricks on this DVD) and “mentalism” (a more purist approach to mind reading and influencing objects). Therefore, I believe this material will appeal more to magicians than to mentalists, despite its theme.

And finally, let me share one last piece of wisdom from Boris Pocus: “There really are two minds… There are… There is… Whatever. I know what I’m talking about, and now you do too.”
