Before you watch the trailer – you gotta know this:

Why did we create the Ice Cold Book Test?
A year ago, deep in our study of classic magic, we learned a few incredible methods devised by Theodore Annemann to perform hard-hitting book tests.
We loved the impact these routines could have but felt they needed some serious modernizations to become a perfect EDC (everyday carry) and feel completely natural and motivated to modern-day spectators.
Our thought was this…what if we could create a book test that looked like this:
You ask a spectator to name a book. Since this is a book you’ll be looking up online, it needs to be something older—one of the classics. The spectator names a book and then with one Google search finds a PDF of that book.
Next, they freely choose some numbers to create a page number. They go to that page number of the chosen book and look at the first word.
Somehow, even though the word is never spoken, written down or shared by the spectator you’re instantly able to reveal it.
It took us a year to fully develop the method.
And man, we love it!

Honestly, even we have been shocked by the incredible hype that’s started to build around this project.
We’ve seen how this can sometimes turn sour and we want to address everything head on.
Here are all the possible questions you might be thinking about.
FAQ:
Does this work on iPhone and Android?
The principle works independent of which operating system you use! It’s pretty simple so any smartphone should work, the setup will just differ slightly depending on which you use.
Also, technology isn’t the only way to make this work – a similar effect could be produced with a simple notebook.
Does this use a feature that could be changed by Apple updates?
No.
Is this language-dependent?
Yes and no. As of right now it is, but with some adapting on your part I don’t see why it wouldn’t work in another language.
It also depends on whether your language has enough books considered ‘classics’ that are in the public domain – if there simply aren’t any books in the language that would come to mind, you’ll struggle. (you could also supplement whatever classics you do have with English ones if your audience happens to be familiar with them too).
How much method did we cut from the trailer?
Sometimes when you watch magic trailers, you get the impression that 5 minutes of process has been cut so that the effect seems to go straight to the reveal.
That really isn’t the case here. The effect should take as long as the description / performance portrays – nothing extra is written down, spoken, or highlighted by the spectator once they get their word. (obviously aside from actually answering you when you guess the word.)
There is of course method going on, but the ‘moment’ so to speak doesn’t add any time or visible steps to the process.
In terms of ways the effect can differ from the trailer…
* Sometimes is that the spectator can’t think of a book that meets your criteria. If this is the case, you can show them a big list of example books to freely choose from. But of course that all happens before the word is thought of, and also doesn’t really add much time to the duration of the effect.
* Sometimes you won’t need to have them say their numbers out loud.
* Sometimes you might guess a letter they’re thinking inside the word.
That’s just three examples of slight subtleties we teach in the tutorial. But on the whole, the effect on the spectator should always feel pretty much the same.
I don’t like using technology. Can I do this without using a phone?
Yes. We suggest a non-tech way of handling this in the product delivery page. Your spectator will need to use their phone though (unless you’re in a setting with a lot of physical classic books!)
Can you instantly repeat it with a different page number with the same book? Or with a different book?
Yeah, we don’t see any reason why you couldn’t run it back and do it again. Obviously as with any effect, the more times you do it the more heat you put on the method, so we probably wouldn’t on principle.
We guess it’s worth saying that if the word is too short / not as cool as you want you can adapt the effect to have them also read the second word in those cases.
Could you use this method to have the spectator read the first sentence?
With some adaptation this would be doable for sure.
Where are you finding free full versions of any classic book online?
Classic books typically enter the public domain after the expiration of copyright, allowing free access and use by the public.
Meaning they can be freely accessed online with a simple Google search.
For instance, one could Google “The Great Gatsby PDF” and access the full book.
