In the early 1900s, the esteemed British magician Ellis Stanyon embarked on an ambitious project to document “every trick published in any book or magical magazine.” This endeavor resulted in his work, A Dictionary of Magical Effects, which was released in monthly installments through his newsletter, Magic. This publication proudly claimed to be “the oldest paper in the world dedicated exclusively to the interests of magicians, jugglers, hand shadowists, ventriloquists, lighting cartoonists, and specialty entertainers.” Renowned magic scholar Karl Fulves meticulously sifted through these rare issues, presenting over 600 of Stanyon’s finest card tricks and techniques, still as relevant today as when they were first introduced.
