What Will He Teach?

SET 1:

Blush: Watch as four jokers transform from blue to red, followed by the entire deck changing color.

Lying Traveler: A selected card moves from packet A to packet B, ultimately landing in packet C. Instead of the magician revealing the card, the spectator discovers their own card through a lie/truth sequence.

Poker Player’s Surprise: The magician teaches a trick based on the classic Poker Player’s Picnic. At the end, spectators learn a real trick, and the magician reveals that he’s not violating the “Magician’s Code” by teaching it. The four aces magically reappear on top of the piles, transforming into the cards needed for a royal flush.

SET 2:

Ring Bandit: From Mike’s book ‘Tesseract’, this quick, visual routine features a solid steel ring linking and unlinking with a rubber band.

Ambitious Spectators: Three spectators cut packets of cards, and the magician places an ace in each packet, keeping the Ace of Spades for himself. After demonstrating how the Ace of Spades rises to the top, spectators find their own aces have done the same.

CSB: A captivating copper/silver/brass routine with three coins and a coin purse, culminating in the coins returning to the purse under impossible conditions.

SET 3:

The 7 Card 21 Card Trick: Spectators use their own deck to find their selection under seemingly impossible circumstances. Ideal for remote performances via phone or Zoom.

New Jazz: A fresh take on Jazz Aces with a clean conclusion where the aces and black spot cards swap places. Push Through Success: A selection is lost in one half of the deck while the aces are reversed in the other. When the two halves are combined, one ace turns face down, matching the selection’s suit, but the actual selection is revealed among the other aces.

Mem-Mental: In this engaging routine, four spectators cut packets and think of a card, leading to a surprising revelation as the magician reads their minds.

Who Is He?

Mike Powers has been a prominent figure in magic for over forty years. He began his journey in 1978 when he met Ed Marlo, becoming a regular at the Marlo table in Chicago. Under Marlo’s mentorship, he published his first book, Powerful Magic, in 1983, featuring contributions from notable magicians like Simon Aronson and Jay Sankey. Mike has since released three additional books: Top Secret Stuff (1993), Power Plays (2006), and Tesseract (2019), with Power Plays earning accolades as Book of the Year in 2006 on the Magic Café.

In addition to his writing, Mike has performed extensively, particularly in restaurant and strolling magic. He has showcased his talents at the Society of American Magicians national convention and was a featured performer at the IBM national convention in 2016. In 1993, he performed at the renowned Magic Castle in Hollywood and lectured at the Hollywood Day of Magic. Most recently, he was the guest of honor at the prestigious 4F Convention in 2019.

After retiring as a Physics professor at Holy Cross College in 2002, Mike dedicated his time to magic, writing, and lecturing across the U.S., Canada, and even Brazil. His latest project merges his passion for magic with music, performing alongside his partner Hutch in StringMagic, where they entertain audiences with magic and music.
