“Nathan Colwell’s new contribution, Lorem Ipsum, is about style over substance, yet, just like the man himself, it manages to deliver both. Well done.”

—Eric Stevens

As 2021 comes to a close, Nathan Colwell presents his latest work—Lorem Ipsum: Style Over Substance. This booklet offers a delightful collection of magic tricks that prioritize enjoyment over complexity. It’s a refreshing take on theatrical magic, providing fun and engaging routines without unnecessary complication.

Lorem Ipsum features eleven unique creations: seven card techniques, two card tricks, a bill routine, and a driver’s license routine. The material varies in difficulty, catering to both beginners and those seeking to refine their skills. Each trick has been tested in various performance settings, making them reliable additions to any magician’s repertoire.

Contents:

Part One—Tricks

Finish Line: A Triumph effect where the spectator handles the deck entirely. They select their card, lose it in the deck, shuffle, and mix cards face-up and face-down—all behind the magician’s back. With just one shuffle and a few cuts, the magician reveals the spectator’s card. Inspired by the late Ramón Riobóo.

Dav’s Transpo: The spectator’s driving license magically transforms into the magician’s license, only to be found in the magician’s wallet! This practical trick is designed to be performed with everyday items. Two methods are included: one for use with a coat and another using just a back pocket. Nathan has relied on this routine for years, especially when caught without props. (Requires a non-insert Mullica-style wallet, such as Anthony Miller’s Triple Threat Wallet.)

Feathers and Bricks: A two-part bill routine where the magician borrows a $5 bill and creates an illusion of doubling it through an origami fold. As the audience watches, the bill appears to transform into two, only to revert back to a single bill at the end. This engaging routine is sure to captivate any audience.

Picnic Under the Stars: A modern twist on the classic Poker Player’s Picnic, performed with a shuffled deck. This version allows the spectator to influence the process and is completely sleightless, making it ideal for beginners. Based on Allan Zola Kronzek’s work.

Part Two—Techniques

Oyster Production: A visually appealing card production from cupped hands, featuring a smooth and satisfying method.

Tap Top Turnover: A subtle packet turnover that serves as an excellent alternative to the Tenkai Optical Revolve when seated.

Convincing Curve: An adaptation of Ernest Earick’s “One Handed Convincing Control,” allowing for a more relaxed grip.

Three Count Experiments: Three unconventional false counts: Lateral Ascanio Steal, Elmsley Switch-Ditch, and Rolling Count. These quirky techniques offer playful challenges for magicians looking to expand their skill set.

Pullman Lift: A double lift inspired by the Allerton Double, combining a bold snap with a delicate turnover for a perfectly executed technique.

Lorem Ipsum: Style Over Substance by N. Colwell, illustrated by Tris Ogram Buckley. 40 pages, staple-bound.
