The “REDONKULOUS!” Routine

Before the performance starts, a spectator is invited to think of any word from a large broadsheet of a local newspaper. They have the freedom to choose from countless words. Once they mentally select a word, the performer seals the newspaper in an envelope, which the spectator takes back to their seat. During the show, the performer retrieves the envelope, opens it, and removes the newspaper. The audience’s task is to discover the word the spectator is concentrating on, no matter how impossible it seems. The performer tears the newspaper in half and asks a random audience member to discard one half. This process repeats, leaving a small piece of paper. A final volunteer is called to the stage, asked to close their eyes, and drop a finger on the paper. They then open their eyes and remember the word they pointed to. While this is happening, the original spectator reveals their thought-of word, for example, “Flytrap!” The volunteer then turns around their whiteboard to reveal they also wrote “Flytrap!”
