The Magic Show by Doug Henning

This 1981 film adaptation of the acclaimed Broadway musical, The Magic Show, showcases a captivating blend of magical illusions and enchanting music. The story follows the gifted young magician Doug (played by Doug Henning) as he uses his talents for good against the sinister Van Zyskind, who embodies the dark side of magic. Doug Henning’s mesmerizing performances culminate in a triumphant finale that delights audiences.

Debuting in 1974 at the Cort Theatre, The Magic Show enjoyed an impressive four-and-a-half-year run on Broadway, with either 1,859 or 1,920 performances, depending on the source. Following its Broadway success, the show toured various cities globally. This musical featured Doug Henning’s innovative magic, memorable songs by Stephen Schwartz, and a book by Bob Randall. The production was so well-received that Doug earned a Tony Award nomination for his outstanding performance.

Interestingly, audiences may notice that Henning does not sing. When the musical was created, the writers faced the challenge of crafting a show around a lead who couldn’t sing. To address this, they structured the narrative so that other cast members delivered the musical elements. Stephen Schwartz, at just 25 years old, composed a dozen songs, with eleven featured on the cast album CD.

The 1981 Canadian television adaptation, which is highlighted here, made adjustments to suit contemporary audiences. Schwartz revised several songs to appeal to a younger demographic, replacing the New York-centric “West End Avenue” with the more universal “Where Did the Magic Go.” He also updated “Solid Silver Platform Shoes” to the contemporary rock number “It’s Gonna Take a Magician,” modified the risqué lyrics of Carmin’s Lament, and introduced a new song for the antagonists that sets the stage for Doug’s escape trick.

This unique rendition of one of Broadway’s most cherished and enduring musicals captures the extraordinary talents of Doug Henning, Anita Morris, and Didi Conn in their prime.
