Based on a true story, this captivating effect begins with an envelope as you share the tale of a painting that survived a devastating house fire in England in 1985. You present five pocket-sized paintings and place the envelope in clear view. Invite your spectator to hold the paintings in their hands while they close their eyes and imagine the moment the painting was discovered amidst the flames. Ask them to select a number between one and five that resonates with them.

As they reveal their chosen number, they will deal the paintings one by one until they stop at their selection. At this moment, they have randomly chosen a painting. You then reveal the envelope, from which you slowly extract a newspaper featuring the headline “THE CRYING BOY ATTACK.” The spectator is astonished to find that their chosen painting depicts a crying boy. To heighten the surprise, flipping the newspaper reveals a larger version of the painting they selected!
