Contact by David Devlin

Book tests are a classic element in mentalism, often used to create impactful performances (as seen in David’s Bookworm Act). However, magicians may find traditional book tests somewhat underwhelming due to their lack of visual flair. The typical book test offers minimal “magic” moments.

David Devlin’s Contact redefines the book test for magicians. This innovative effect features a séance-themed presentation, allowing performers to connect with “spirits” through the book. While the presentation can be eerie, it can also be performed as straightforward magic, suitable for both close-up and stage settings. A standout feature is that the book can be gifted to a spectator, ensuring the secret remains undiscovered. It may be seen, but it will never be found.

Here’s how it works:

On the table, there’s a book, a small pencil, a slip of paper, and an envelope. The performer discusses spiritualism and the idea of contacting the deceased. The envelope is shown to be completely empty, and it’s explained that the spirits need a reference point—a word from the book. A random page is selected, and both the page number and the first word are noted. The book is then closed and handed to a spectator.

The performer explains that the spirits will only reveal themselves in darkness. The empty envelope is shown again, and the spectator places the pencil inside, sealing it and setting it on the table.

After a brief pause, the envelope suddenly jumps! The performer opens it, exclaiming, “Oh, my God.” Something extraordinary has occurred. The spectator is instructed to turn to the chosen page in the book, only to discover that half of it has been torn out! The envelope is flipped, revealing its contents: first the pencil, then the torn page. The spectator finds that the torn page matches perfectly, with the words “I AM HERE” written in pencil!
