Conjurers serve as facilitators of simulated magical experiences, and most experts agree that these simulations should be impactful and straightforward. A prime example is the act of predicting a mentally chosen card. This begins with the performer documenting or stating a prediction before a spectator names a card. Ultimately, the chosen card matches the prediction, creating an effect akin to revealing a person’s thoughts in real-time. This represents an ideal outcome in mentalism.

Our resources are filled with techniques for predicting mentally selected cards, with “Brainwave” being one of the most renowned. Its climax is unexpected; the magician does not hint at a prediction before asking a spectator to think of a card. Instead, the spectator simply names a card, and the magician reveals the chosen card from a spread of face-down cards.

Is there a potential flaw? Yes. Since the card is revealed after the spectator names it, a skilled magician might find a way to locate and reverse the chosen card. However, Paul Fox addressed this issue by demonstrating that the reversed card has a different colored back, suggesting that the performer knew which card would be selected from the 52 options.

Skeptics might question, “If one can predict which card will be chosen, why not eliminate the deck entirely and place a single card face down as a prediction?” This approach would indeed be more effective.

Perhaps this was the vision R. W. Hull had in mind, and it certainly aligns with my thoughts while composing this treatise.
