Week One: (November 7th 2021, 4pm ET) – Presence and Absence
At its core, card magic revolves around information—colors, suits, and values that the magician manipulates. Coin magic, however, is fundamentally about the appearance and disappearance of objects—presence and absence. What better venue than “Vanishing, Inc.” to explore these essential elements of coin magic? In this class, we will examine simple vanishes with individual coins, dedicating most of our time to the intricacies of manipulating multiple coins to create stunning effects. This area of “stack work” can be challenging, even for skilled performers, yet it offers immense rewards. Expect to learn various techniques and routines that showcase the art of making coins vanish and reappear in captivating ways.
Week Two: (November 14th 2021, 4pm ET) – Hatching a Plot
Many magicians overlook that a coin vanish, when viewed in isolation, is merely a technique rather than true magic. There are numerous narratives that magicians have embraced with coins, and this session will critically analyze some of the “standards” that experienced performers find effective in professional contexts. From Coins Across to Coins Through the Table, we will explore how presentation intertwines with technique, how narratives enhance performances, and the idea that sometimes simplicity is more impactful.
Week Three: (November 21st 2021, 4pm ET) – Zoom Call
This live Q&A session will focus on fostering creativity in your magic, regardless of the props you prefer. Drawing from various examples in coin magic, Kainoa will guide you through his approaches to developing and refining material, from individual effects to complete acts. Some of his insights may seem straightforward, while others might challenge your thinking. This session aims to help you embrace creativity, illustrating that it is not a linear process but rather a series of fits and starts, where the interplay of hands and mind culminates in the illusion of a cohesive performance.
