Jamie Daws is a virtuoso in crafting mesmerizing magic with a sinister twist. His performances keep spectators on the edge of their seats, with routines and scripts that send chills down your spine.

Spooky magic elicits astonishing reactions, and in this course, Jamie will unveil the secrets behind it.

THEMING:

We start by exploring macabre themes and how to structure them effectively, employing techniques commonly used by actors. We’ll discuss the importance of being sensitive to taboo subjects while ensuring tasteful presentation. Learn how to build an immersive atmosphere, focusing on tonality and pacing to captivate your audience. Discover how to transform a mundane effect into something bizarre, exemplified by my rendition of Magic Smith’s ‘Double Cross,’ which I incorporate into every performance. I’ll explain my choices and how they enhance the overall effect. We’ll delve into tension, hypnotic language, and rituals, and watch a chilling short film that you’ll want to share with friends! Finally, we’ll wrap up by integrating everything into a cohesive performance.

PROPS:

This section emphasizes the significance of props in your performances, from playing cards to photographs. We’ll explore aging props to align with our themes and introduce you to my cherished China doll, Greta! I’ll showcase props I’ve aged for various auditions and performances over the years. We’ll discuss the emotional weight of props in macabre effects and how to adapt them for larger audiences, as well as how to repurpose items you already own into intriguing pieces.

METHOD:

In the concluding section, we’ll focus on method and its crucial role in creating spine-chilling tricks. Simplifying methods allows for a greater emphasis on presentation and integrates methods into the effect’s ritual. We’ll examine SCARED, a haunted deck effect, where a subtle change transforms a magic trick into a haunting ritual. We’ll also revisit my first creepy creation, The Burial, and how its theming, straightforward methodology, and compelling script contribute to its unsettling impact.

We’ll touch on SCREAM and He’s Not Here, analyzing the structure, theming, props, and methods involved. Additionally, we’ll briefly discuss simple switch techniques for photographs that enhance effects like ‘He’s Not Here,’ allowing small effects to resonate with larger audiences. We’ll explore how to leverage audience misconceptions as part of the method, featuring Moz Powrie’s remarkable “Decisions,” which I utilize as a makeshift Ouija board. I’ll present various adaptations of Moz’s gimmick and explain how to modernize classic effects by scaling props for contemporary audiences.
