The Book of Fate by Dan Dent

The Book of Fate offers a collection of straightforward Tarot card routines that are easy to perform. While the techniques may not be groundbreaking, the engaging presentation and scripting make these routines practical for performers.

Three routines are ideal for Close-Up and Walk-Around performances, meeting essential criteria: instant reset, performed in the spectator’s hands (no table required), and easily pocketed afterward. The fourth routine is designed for Stand-Up performances but can also be adapted for Close-Up settings, having been showcased multiple times on the author’s Ghost Walk of Zurich, always receiving enthusiastic responses.

The main effect in the PDF, The Book of Fate, combines a Tarot deck with a diary effect, providing the spectator with a one-card reading. Although some initial preparation is necessary (including creating a rough and smooth deck), the outcome justifies the effort. Two variations of the effect are included: one where the spectator’s chosen Tarot card is not revealed before they name it, and another where it is. A basic understanding of the Major Arcana Tarot card meanings is beneficial, and the book provides a list of each card along with keywords for their meanings.

Witch Trial is inspired by the classic Colour Monte or three-card trick. The handling has been adjusted to ensure the Tarot cards remain oriented correctly throughout, with the moves perfectly aligned with the script’s elements. The narrative revolves around the last individual executed for witchcraft in Europe. A link to a performance-only video of this routine is included.

The Pip And The Pendulum features a pendulum held by a spectator, tracing elements on various minor arcana cards, reminiscent of Richard Webster’s Pendulum Power, but with a Tarot twist. As a standalone piece, it serves as an excellent demonstration, teaching audiences how to use a pendulum. When combined with Deddy Corbuzier’s Free Will (using Tarot cards), it creates a beautifully motivated routine that you will enjoy performing.

Ghost Walk Tarot is primarily a Stand-Up routine and leans more towards performance art than traditional magic, though it incorporates some subtle trickery. The performer offers a Tarot reading for a couple in the audience, but it soon becomes apparent that the performer is attempting to flirt with one of them. Even if this style isn’t your preference, the script is entertaining. The routine can be adapted to any language, although some wordplay may need adjustments.
