Who Is He?

For over 20 years, James has honed his craft as a world-class magician, pickpocket, and hypnotist. After studying psychiatry at university in Southampton, he developed a deep understanding of psychology and human behavior in Bournemouth.

His fascination with perceptional psychology—how people perceive reality and how easily they can be deceived—was ignited after watching a close-up magician on television. This led him to explore the connections between magic and psychology.

With just a deck of cards and his insights into human behavior, James taught himself sleight of hand and misdirection. Within months, he became the resident magician at a local bar and restaurant, performing close-up magic three nights a week for four years.

He expanded into weddings, private functions, and corporate events, refining his skills as a magician and theatrical pickpocket. His unique combination of sensory deception, sleight of hand, and con artistry quickly earned him respect among magicians worldwide, along with the title of Master of Misdirection.

James was among the first to merge contemporary sleight of hand with theatrical pickpocketing and suggestion hypnosis, and he remains one of the best in the field. The Magic Circle recognized his talent by awarding him the title of The Best Close-Up Magician in the UK, a distinction he proudly holds.

With several bestselling instructional DVDs on performance magic, James is in high demand as a teacher. His DVDs have set the standard for live performance in the industry.

His professional life includes consulting on performance and confidence at institutions like Imperial College London, providing creative consultancy for TV magic shows, performing breathtaking sleight of hand at private and corporate events, and teaching advanced hypnosis skills to hypnotherapists. In his spare time, he enjoys the seaside with his wife Jo and their two sons, Ben and Charlie.

Alongside his business partner Daniele Sicorace, James runs POWA ACADEMY, offering training resources in pickpocketing, hypnosis, and magic.
