Maleficium By Paul Prater
At first, I found it challenging to express my thoughts about this book. When I describe our publications as beautiful, inventive, and clever, it can seem self-serving, even if it’s true. I could simply suggest, “Scroll down for the free preview; it speaks for itself,” but I know some readers need more convincing.
Let me share a few insights and then present an excerpt from Paul’s introduction. After that, you can check out the PDF preview for the full table of contents and a generous look at the book’s front.
We receive manuscripts in various stages of completion—some are rough drafts, while others are nearly print-ready. This book is predominantly Paul Prater’s work, with minimal intervention from us to fix font issues or make slight adjustments. Paul is a true artist, evident in his photography throughout the book and the color plate we will add for owners. His meticulous attention to detail is commendable.
The narratives are crafted to guide your audience into the right emotional state. In the articles, Paul shares his insights on bizarre and storytelling magic, aiming to inspire both enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
In Paul’s own words from the introduction:
This collection features effects I’ve created, some for specific events and others specifically for this book. Notably, you won’t need to purchase magic props from a store to perform these effects. I prefer crafting my own props, and most of these effects will require you to do the same. I’ve often found it frustrating to buy a magic book only to discover that performing the effects necessitates additional purchases.
This book avoids that pitfall. I enjoy detailing the process for each effect, and I always need a script. Writing everything out forces me to conceptualize the routine clearly. A well-crafted script enhances storytelling, making the performance far more engaging than simply stating, “Now I do this, then that.” Since I do this for every effect, I decided to compile my scripts for those interested.
I’ve gained so much knowledge from reading the works of other magicians, and I hope to share what I’ve learned in return. Admittedly, there’s a bit of ego in publishing my work. I’ve included some of my poetry and artwork, reflecting my degree in English and minor in studio art. While I love art, I often find little time for it. Magic is my primary artistic outlet.
In this book, I aim to share my artistic side. I hope the art and poetry complement the magic text rather than detract from it. While I enjoy the magic presented here, I also appreciate classic tricks like cups and balls, card tricks, and coin magic. All forms of magic have their place in entertainment.
However, I strive to infuse my magic with deeper meaning, enriching the experience for both the magician and the audience. I hope you find enjoyment in what I’ve presented.
