Genii Review
Genii Magazine, the oldest and most esteemed magic publication in the U.S., has been enlightening magicians since 1936.
In the December 2003 issue, Joe M. Turner reviewed Oz’s DVD, Stealing Pips. Oz Pearlman, a talented young magician from New York City, presents card magic that is easy to learn, enjoyable to perform, and mesmerizing to watch. This DVD features a dozen of his most practical routines for close-up magicians.
The effects range from predictions to vanishes and transpositions. While some plots are classic, Pearlman’s unique contributions are significant and worthy of attention. His execution is filled with passion and precision, making even the Bertram color change appear as if it were a camera trick. His clear and thorough explanations enhance the learning experience. The “IC3” routine is an ungimmicked version of David Regal’s “Triple Vision,” eliminating the need for gaffed decks and is a standout on the DVD.
This DVD appeals to me for several reasons. Firstly, the magic transcends mere finger positioning or phase sequences; it showcases practical, original material, deep expertise on specific sleights, or variations that significantly enhance routines, such as removing the need for gaffed decks. Each of these elements motivates me to explore new routines or moves.
Additionally, the production quality is high without overshadowing the instructional content. While I appreciate creative and theatrical training approaches, I quickly lose interest when style eclipses substance. Thankfully, this product maintains a perfect balance.
This DVD is a treasure for anyone performing card magic in close-up or strolling environments. (And just in case you’re curious, Mr. Pearlman’s first name rhymes with “hose.”)
