During extensive testing of his latest effect, Temptation, Gordon Bean had a memorable encounter with Greg Simko, the C.E.O. of the U.S. Playing Card Co. One evening at The Magic Castle, while discussing a custom deck for the film Shade, Gordon showcased his routine using the Ace, Two, and Three of Spades.

In the first phase, the Three visibly transitioned from Gordon’s right hand to his left, eliciting a smile from Mr. Simko, who was accustomed to impressive sleight-of-hand. The Ace then jumped back, prompting Mr. Simko to lean in closer. Finally, the Two leaped into Mr. Simko’s hand, leading him to conclude, “You’re using those special cards we printed for you.” Gordon invited him to inspect the cards, and after a careful examination, Mr. Simko remarked, “But they are ordinary Bicycles.” To which Gordon replied, “The finest cards made. I wouldn’t use anything else.”
