Discover the Art of Automata with John Gaughan
John Gaughan stands out as a leading illusion builder and designer, renowned for his exceptional skills in restoring antique automata. At the recent L.A. History Conference, attendees were captivated by a performance featuring Balsamo, the Talking Skull, alongside the talented Max Maven. This year, Gaughan unveiled a fascinating automaton clarinet player, currently undergoing restoration.
Even if you missed the 1986 conference showcasing Robert-Houdin’s remarkable acrobat automaton, Antonio Diavolo, many will remember it from a Ricky Jay television special. This astonishing mechanical figure executes intricate trapeze acts, including a daring leap at the end, all without the aid of electricity, pushing the limits of what we believe is possible.
During his initial presentation of the meticulously restored acrobat at the History Conference, Gaughan, in collaboration with Jim Steinmeyer, released a beautiful monograph. Limited to just 500 copies, this newly printed edition delves into the automaton’s performance, detailing the intricate mechanics that make it come alive.
