Eric Samuels: “Nearly five years ago, I set out to write this book, intending to finish it in just a few months. However, as time passed, the content expanded, and what started as a quick project turned into a long-term commitment. By the three-year mark, I realized that despite my passion for writing, I likely wouldn’t undertake another project of this scale. Thus, I decided to include nearly all my original material, including my signature routine that has received standing ovations worldwide for over a decade.

If you’re familiar with my work, you know that I strive for transparency when releasing new material. I want performers to understand precisely what they are investing in, which is why I avoid overly edited video demos, exaggerated marketing, and unrealistic claims. I even offer private, no-obligation product tours for items like BOX-X and TableVision, where I demonstrate their capabilities and limitations. My aim is to eliminate the disappointment that often accompanies new purchases, ensuring that the only surprise you experience is a delightful one!

Here’s an honest overview of what you can expect from this book:

Setting the Stage: Content & Character for the Stage Mentalist features two main sections: Centre Stage and Backstage.

The Centre Stage section includes 33 original routines I’ve personally performed, with very few previously released. Some routines utilize specific high-end props, while others may require items that are harder to find. In such cases, I’ve provided alternative methods to ensure accessibility. Even if you never perform a particular routine, I hope the structure, thought process, and nuances will inspire you to develop your own ideas.

The Backstage section consists of 27 chapters that explore the behind-the-scenes aspects of being a performer. While this book is primarily aimed at stage mentalists, I believe these insights are valuable for anyone who performs, regardless of their style or venue. Topics covered include character development, set design, scripting, rehearsal techniques, mindset, marketing, and more—essential elements for becoming the best performer you can be.

We invested significant effort into the design and printing of this book, collaborating with Phill Smith. From the distinctive cover to the 420 pages of text and visuals, I wanted this book to reflect both quality content and design. It’s not a limited edition, but due to the unexpectedly high production costs and time, a second printing is unlikely.

That said, Setting the Stage may not be for everyone. No book is. However, whether you are a dedicated hobbyist, a part-time performer, or a full-time professional, I hope this book offers you practical content, thought-provoking concepts, and a spark of inspiration to elevate your craft.” – Eric Samuels
