Terry Herbert shares his thoughts: Many will remember Jimmy Carlo for his hilarious, award-winning Sumo warrior act. Over the years, he has transformed into Jimbo, one of the leading children’s entertainers, achieving remarkable success.
Jimbo has released two DVDs: “Kid-Ability,” showcasing his magical performances, and “Games-Ability,” focusing on entertaining games. This topic has been largely overlooked in the vast array of children’s entertainment DVDs.
To review these discs, I enlisted the help of my granddaughters, Erin (8) and Lilah (4).
The magic DVD begins with a lively audience of schoolchildren clapping along to Jimbo’s catchy theme tune, which my grandchildren continued to sing long after the show ended.
Jimbo presents his unique take on classic children’s tricks, including Supreme’s Magic Spell Book, a changing bag with a blendo, the timeless Silver Sceptre, and the Magic Colouring Book. His rendition of Tel’s Bell features a humorous routine with an orange hooter, a sweet production, and a hilarious paper tearing segment that had the children in stitches. In total, there are 14 routines, complete with essential bits of business that enhance children’s entertainment.
A standout moment occurs during the Silver Sceptre routine, where he weaves a delightful story about a present from Santa Claus. Lilah laughed and reacted as if she were seeing it for the first time, despite having watched me perform it numerous times. This reinforces my belief that children thrive on repetition.
