Ouroboros

noun: an absolute miracle!

This could be a groundbreaking concept in card magic!

Present a deck of cards that your audience has never encountered before: each card features a unique message on its face, indicating how it will be revealed! For instance, the Ace of Hearts states “Inside the box,” meaning if a participant selects it, it will appear inside the card box.

Every card carries a different instruction: “Face-up in the deck,” “Rise out of the deck,” “Folded up in a box,” “In a wallet (and an envelope!),” “Under your watch,” “At a named number,” and more.

The deck is shuffled, and the participant picks a card and reads its message, knowing how it will be revealed. The performer turns away, ensuring they see nothing. The card is shuffled back into the deck, which is placed on the table without any further handling by the performer (and no cards are palmed at any point!).

The performer asks how the card should be revealed, and the participant suggests: in the performer’s pocket. The performer, skeptical, shows his pocket is empty. He then inquires about the chosen card, and the participant states it’s the “Three of Diamonds.” The participant counts the cards, discovering that the Three of Diamonds is missing from the 51 cards remaining.

When the performer checks his pocket again, it remains empty. He asks the participant to repeat the exact words on the card. The participant responds with “In his pocket.” The performer is astonished, explaining that no one has ever selected the Three of Diamonds before and has always been curious about how it would work!

He concludes that since he owns the deck, the message must refer to the participant’s pocket! Miraculously, when the participant reaches into their own pocket, they find their selected card!

The exciting part is that Ouroboros is not just the incredible trick described above; it’s a complete system, allowing for different cards and outcomes.

All my preferred outcomes are ‘card to impossible location’ effects, as detailed in the instructions. Once you master the system, you can customize it to fit your style. It can also be seamlessly integrated as the climax of any multiple selection routine you may already perform.

Ouroboros is so impactful that it should be used as a finale. In fact, it might be the only card trick you need in that particular set. Nothing can follow it.

One of my beta testers has had incredible success with it at weddings, with the bride discovering her selection inside the groom’s pocket while standing across the table!
