This is the trick that amazed Al Mann! It stands out as one of the finest impromptu demonstrations of psychic ability ever devised. While you could invest in expensive electronic devices to achieve a similar effect, Bob Hughes’ ingenious method allows you to perform this feat using a simple technique that resides solely in your mind.

No props to buy or carry. Whenever you’re challenged, you can execute an astonishing effect using borrowed items that you never touch!

EFFECT: To showcase a psychic test, the performer requests a participant to provide five envelopes, five business cards or blank index cards, and a writing instrument. The performer deliberately avoids touching any of these items.

With the performer’s back turned, the participant signs one of the business cards, randomly selects one of the five envelopes, and seals the signed card inside. They then turn the envelope flap side up and sign their name on it.

Next, the participant seals the remaining four unsigned business cards in the other envelopes, signing their names on the flaps as well. After mixing the five envelopes, the participant numbers them from 1 to 5, ensuring they do not know which contains their signed card.

Throughout this process, the performer remains unaware of any details, having kept their back turned without any secret peeks.

When the participant finishes, the performer turns around and, astonishingly, identifies the envelope containing the signed card without ever touching any of the envelopes!

This truly appears to be a psychic feat under test conditions. For mentalists, it offers an unparalleled challenge. You carry nothing but the secret technique in your mind.

During my time as a psychic, I used this effect to astonish reporters. Al Mann recommended it as a foolproof method to impress skeptics due to its test conditions. Over 30 years, I refined the technique and developed additional presentations.

Recently, I met Bob Hughes, who informed me that Al Mann had not fully explained the secret in his publication, omitting crucial details for proper execution.

Place a deck of cards on the table alongside a box of envelopes and a regular pen. The envelopes are unmarked and ungimmicked.

Turn your back and have someone select a card without any forcing. They sign their name on the card and seal it in one of the ungimmicked envelopes. They then choose four other cards and seal them in the remaining envelopes, all while you remain unaware of their choices.

In keeping with test conditions, the participant signs each envelope and mixes them up, ensuring they don’t know which contains their signed card. They number each envelope from 1 to 5 and place them on the table.

Now, the performer turns around, does not touch the envelopes, and asks the participant to concentrate on their card. Without writing anything down or fishing for information, the performer confidently states, for example, “Your card is the four of spades, and it is in the envelope marked with a 3.”

Upon opening the envelope, the signed card is revealed, confirming the performer’s accurate divination.
