The New Conjurors’ Magazine: Volume 1

PDF

The inaugural Conjurors’ Magazine debuted in 1792 in London, edited by Henry Lemoine. This groundbreaking monthly publication was dedicated to the art of magic, showcasing “singular deceptions, philosophical amusements, curious experiments, mathematical operations, and sympathetic secrets.”

In 1906, Harry Houdini and his brother Theo Hardeen revived this nearly forgotten magazine, renaming it The Conjurer’s Monthly Magazine (with an ‘e’ instead of an ‘o’).

Walter B. Gibson and Julian Proskauer brought the title back to life in 1945 with The New Conjurors’ Magazine, which continued until September 1949, producing five volumes before the ‘New’ was dropped.

This magazine is a treasure trove of remarkable tricks and features a ‘Speaking of Pictures’ column that includes two full-page photographs of renowned magicians in every issue. The images alone justify the modest price of this publication. Additionally, the series on De Land’s marked and gaffed cards is essential reading for enthusiasts of marked and trick cards.
