Alexander Marsh – Three Envelope Test
This unique take on a mentalism classic has become a fundamental part of my stage performance. I’ve transformed the traditional three envelope test into a compelling mini-Q&A experience.
The effect is straightforward: three envelopes filled with ‘question cards’ are distributed to three audience members, who remain seated. They complete their cards, seal them inside the envelopes, and write their names on the front.
Once sealed, the envelopes are handed to the performer, who reads a name from one envelope and reveals the thought of the corresponding spectator.
Next, the performer selects one of the remaining envelopes, identifies the name, and accurately deduces that the spectator is thinking of a specific country, even naming a place they recently visited.
The final participant recalls their first kiss. The performer vividly describes details of this memory, reveals the name, and as a stunning finale, discloses the exact age of the spectator during their first kiss!
This routine holds a special place in my heart and remains a key element of my act. While many claim their routines are essential, I can genuinely say that I continue to perform this and cherish it deeply, which is why it’s limited to just 50 copies.
What do you receive? The book is a 66-page, A5 paperback that outlines the presentation and techniques behind the routine, along with the subtleties that make it truly remarkable.
The manuscript also includes additional insights on Q&A, presentational ideas for the three envelope test, and a bonus routine titled ‘No Envelope Test’ for more casual settings.

An excerpt from the foreword by Jerome Finley:
“What you’re about to read is practical material; plain and simple. Over the years, we’ve been fortunate to see various interpretations of the classic ‘Three Envelope Test’ and many adaptations. Some have been exceptional, while others… not so much.”
