CONTRIBUTIONS BY COLIN MCLEOD
Review by David Lees
Having recently acquired this book, I wanted to share my insights with fellow enthusiasts.
The book is impressively produced, featuring an attractive cover and a clean layout. Colin presents the effects in a direct and concise manner, making it easy to follow. However, I recommend reading it thoroughly rather than skimming, as it contains valuable advice on technique and presentation.
Inside, you’ll find a variety of powerful effects tailored for mentalists. A solid understanding of mentalism will enhance your experience and comprehension of the material.
Effect #1: The Psychological Word Force
This intriguing concept allows a spectator to think of a word, which the mentalist then reveals without any physical book. Colin meticulously breaks down the process, covering everything from atmosphere setting to scripting and potential outs. His innovative “Psychological Corner” strategy is particularly noteworthy and applicable in various scenarios.
Effect #2: Mind Trip
This effect quickly became a favorite of mine. It creates the illusion that the spectator is reading your mind, depending on your presentation style. The premise involves guiding someone through an imaginary journey while you predict the scenes they envision. It’s a sensational effect that stands out from similar commercial offerings.
Effect #3: KO(LI)N-TROL
This effect showcases the ability to influence a person’s thoughts and actions on multiple levels. Colin provides an in-depth explanation of a technique often misunderstood by mentalists. He dedicates seven pages to ensure you grasp the nuances, making it essential for any serious practitioner to study and apply diligently.
Effect #4: Change Management
This effect is a showstopper. A spectator selects a coin from their pocket, concealing it while the audience reads their mind to reveal not only the coin’s value but also its date. Colin emphasizes that this routine can be performed in various settings, utilizing psychology and dual reality. Mastery of this effect requires confidence and careful rehearsal.
Effect #5: Serial Prevaricator
This stunning effect involves two spectators, one of whom conceals a folded banknote in their hand. The mentalist reveals not only who holds the note but also its serial number. This effect alone justifies the book’s price, showcasing a remarkable level of skill.
Effect #6: Thought Transmitted
While not a standalone effect, this handling technique for a peek wallet is invaluable. Colin’s subtle approach to gaining a peek without drawing attention is a skill many mentalists struggle with, making this section particularly beneficial.
Effect #7: Wish You Were Here
This is my personal favorite. A participant writes down the name of a loved one and several random names, which are then mixed. You reveal the chosen name with precision, making this a goldmine for mentalists.
Effect #8: Perfect(ish) Serial Revelation
In this effect, a participant removes a note from their wallet while another acts as a fair witness. The mentalist reveals the note’s number in a straightforward and clever manner, showcasing an effective method.
Effect #9: Time for a Date
This clever adaptation allows the mentalist to predict a participant’s birth month and date using commonly owned equipment. It’s a clean and effective presentation that requires minimal effort from the performer.
Effect #10: Final Cabaret
First introduced to me during a Marc Paul lecture, this effect builds on a classic by Stephen Tucker, adding a delightful kicker to the conclusion that enhances its impact.
Effect #11: The Book Test
Imagine a spectator selects any book, opens it to a random page, and thinks of a word. You then call them, revealing the word they chose. This cheeky presentation is sure to leave a lasting impression.
This book is a treasure trove of valuable material for working mentalists. Colin shares insightful handling tips and acknowledges the sources of his inspiration. I hope this review helps you decide whether to purchase this book. In my opinion, the content is exceptional, and any mentalist would benefit from considering it. The effects are compact yet impactful.
