“Aurelio Paviato is a master of his craft. He takes classic effects and gives them a 21st-century spin. Solid practical methods are concealed by a relaxed style, easy manner, and a keen eye for detail. This is superb material from the repertoire of one of Italy’s leading professionals.”David Britland
“Wow, what a delightful book. After reading it, it’s clear why Aurelio Paviato won first place in close-up at FISM. He thoroughly explains his FISM-winning act, covering both the ‘how’ and the ‘why.’ The book also delves into his working repertoire from 40 years of close-up, sleight-of-hand card and coin magic. The writing is excellent, complemented by around 500 photos illustrating every detail of the routines and moves.”Charlie Randall
“This wonderful book is a profound study of magic. It serves as a roadmap of masterful technique and presentation, featuring a comprehensive update on the secrets of the 1982 FISM award-winning act. From Richard Hatch: In reading Aurelio Paviato’s Studies in Deception, I was reminded of Ottokar Fischer’s words from over a century ago regarding the card magic of Johann Nepomuk Hofzinser: “This work is not intended for dilettantes. But it will bring joy to experienced performers.” Like Hofzinser, Aurelio Paviato combines intelligent presentations with exceptional sleight of hand.

In 1982, the FISM in Lausanne made history with the first American Grand Prix winner, Lance Burton, and the first American first place in close-up to Michael Ammar. Both used their victories as launching pads for successful careers. However, it’s often overlooked that Michael did not win first place outright; the competition ended in a rare tie with Aurelio Paviato, who performed an outstanding close-up coin routine. After returning to Milan and his banking job, Aurelio embraced his true passion for magic seven years later, becoming a successful full-time performer in Italy, with regular television appearances and a busy corporate schedule.

This book showcases his work over the last forty years, featuring pieces from his professional repertoire with all the nuances developed through repeated performances. It presents commercial, classical magic perfected by a professional.

While most routines focus on stand-up card magic, he has also updated his first-place FISM act, integrating four decades of insights to enhance its practicality and magic. Originally intended as an opening routine, he now often uses it to close his intimate performances.

Edited by Stephen Minch, this book offers clarity and historical context, making it a pleasure to study.

“This work is not intended for dilettantes. But it will bring joy to experienced performers.”
